Israel: 'Not True' We Spied On US-Iran Talks

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 24 Maret 2015 | 23.22

By Sky News US Team

Israel has denied a claim that it spied on US-led nuclear talks with Iran in order to undermine support for a deal.

A Wall Street Journal report, quoting current and former US officials, said the Israelis had eavesdropped on the negotiations.

Israel also obtained intelligence from secret US briefings, informants and diplomatic contacts in Europe, according to the Journal.

The White House was said to be especially angry because Israel had shared its inside information with US lawmakers to brief against a nuclear accord.

"It is one thing for the US and Israel to spy on each other," the Journal quoted a senior US official briefed on the matter as saying.

"It is another thing for Israel to steal US secrets and play them back to US legislators to undermine US diplomacy."

The spying was reportedly discovered by American intelligence intercepting communications by Israeli officials.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the report was "not true".

"We do not spy on the United States," he said. "There are enough participants in these negotiations, including Iranians.

"We got our intelligence from other sources, not from the United States."

Republican House Speaker John Boehner said he was "baffled" by reports of Israeli spying.

If true, the espionage would do little to allay the currently strained relations between the two allies.

Scarcely a day has passed since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's return to power last week without a critical comment by Obama administration officials, who were outraged by his pre-election posturing.

The Israeli prime minister apologised on Monday for his remarks playing the race card to drum up more right-wing votes at the expense of Israel's Arab minority.

He also backtracked on comments flatly ruling out a Palestinian state - a White House foreign policy priority which spurred months of fruitless shuttle diplomacy by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

US officials, however, have been unimpressed by Mr Netanyahu's olive branch.

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough told a left-leaning pro-Israel lobby on Monday: "We cannot simply pretend that those comments were never made."

Mr Netanyahu irked the White House earlier this month by addressing the US Congress to warn in apocalyptic terms against a deal with Iran.

Many Republican lawmakers are backing the Israeli prime minister ahead of the US president.

Under the emerging terms of the deal, the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China are offering to ease sanctions if Iran limits its nuclear programme.

Iran says its uranium enrichment is for civilian energy purposes and denies its plans to build a bomb.

Falling food prices meant the annual rate of UK inflation stood in uncharted territory of 0% in February, boosting family budgets.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said its headline CPI measure of inflation eased from 0.3% in January to 0% in February year-on-year.

The figure sets a new record low for CPI since comparable records began in 1989 though the ONS added that inflation may have been lower in 1960 at -0.6%, based on unofficial estimates.

The ONS said consumer prices, measured under prices for a core basket of goods, were unchanged from a year earlier as lower food and computer goods prices outweighed upward pressures.

Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices saw a record year-on-year drop of 3.3% amid the supermarket price war.

Weather Unlikely To Be Cause Of Plane Crash

Weather Unlikely To Be Cause Of Plane Crash

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

Weather could be ruled out as a cause of the French Alps Airbus disaster at an early stage, according to experts.

Conditions in the region of the crash were not out of the ordinary, with no significant storms in the area.

Dr Rob Thompson, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said: "The weather conditions in the area of southern France where the crash is reported to have occurred look like nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year.

"Wind speeds on the ground showed breezy conditions, although this does not indicate the conditions higher up in the atmosphere.

"Available satellite imagery shows there were not any significant storm systems locally. Data from lightning detectors show the nearest electrical storms were occurring in Sardinia, some 186 miles off the south coast of France, which would be much too far away to cause any issues to air traffic."

Airbus said a team of its technical advisers has been sent to the scene to help the French air accident investigators.

They are trying to establish what triggered the plane's eight-minute descent before crashing.

The A320 aircraft is one of the most popular passenger planes in the world, used by most airlines.

Known for its efficiency and advanced technology, more than 11,000 orders for planes from the A320 family have been made since its launch in 1987.

Aviation safety expert Alex Macheras told Sky News: "The A320 is used almost by every airline that has short-haul operations, from British Airways to easyJet and American airlines.

"Every airline which operates the short flights goes for the A320 because they are a very efficient aircraft, modern and up-to-date and they have the latest technology on the flight deck which makes flying them a treat."

Captain Mike Vivian added: "It is a very good plane. They are operating all over the world and they are intrinsically a short-haul aircraft and have a very good safety record."

The A320 aircraft family is made up of narrow-bodied short to medium range twin engine jets. The first flight took place on 22 February 1987.

There have been 60 incidents known as "aviation occurrences" since the aircraft family was introduced, resulting in 789 fatalities up to 23 March.

One of the best-known incidents involving an A320 aircraft was the so-called Miracle on the Hudson in which a plane crash-landed in New York's Hudson River. All 155 people on board survived.

The AirAsia plane which crashed into the Java Sea in December was also an Airbus A320.

The Airbus A320 which crashed in France on Tuesday is operated by Germanwings, a budget airline which is wholly owned by Lufthansa. The aircraft was manufactured in 1991.

Germanwings has 81 aircraft operating out of Cologne, Bonn, Hamburg, Berlin and Dusseldorf.

Jolie Has Ovaries Removed After Cancer Scare

Angelina Jolie has revealed she has had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed after doctors detected possible signs of cancer.

The Oscar-winning actress has written about the procedure, which she had last week, in an opinion piece in the New York Times entitled Diary of a Surgery.

"It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer," she writes.

She also had a double mastectomy in 2013 after it was found she had the faulty BRCA1 gene, which sharply increased the chance of her developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Jolie, who is married to actor Brad Pitt and has six children, also wrote about her decision to have that procedure.

She says having her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed was "a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe".

The operation, called laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, brings on early menopause.

"Regardless of the hormone replacements I'm taking, I am now in menopause," Jolie writes.

"I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes.

Rock School's Lil' Chris Dies Aged 24

Lil' Chris, who starred in the reality programme Rock School, has died aged 24.

The singer and actor, whose real name was Chris Hardman, became famous after joining Kiss frontman Gene Simmons' Channel 4 show in 2006, aged 15.

He went on to have a top five hit with his first single Checkin' It Out shortly after.

In 2012 he starred in the musical Loserville: The Musical at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds.

Allan Dodgeon, who managed Chris for a year from 2013 at AD Records, told Sky News: "He was a talented young artist who we had the pleasure to live and work with for over a year.

"We are completely shocked and saddened and our thoughts are with his family."

Lil' Chris sent his last tweet six days ago when he wrote: "Good morning everybody! Lovely day! Love you all x"

It is understood he had suffered from depression.

A Suffolk Police spokeswoman said: "Police investigating the sudden death of a man in Lowestoft can confirm they are not treating it as suspicious.

"Officers received a call from the ambulance service on Monday 23 March at around 11.45am and attended an address in Union Road following a sudden death of a 24-year-old man.

"A post mortem examination is due to take place to establish the cause of death and a file will be passed to the coroner in due course and an inquest opened."

British boxer Anthony Ogogo was one of the first to pay tribute to the singer on Twitter: "Who remembers Lil Chris from Rock School? He went to the same school as me, super talented kid has died.

"Thoughts go out to his family. Such a shame. Really nice guy and positive role model for our area #ChChChCheckingItOut."

Caroline Flack, who met the star on children's show TMI, said: "Oh my god. Lil Chris. He was a regular guest on TMI. Always always such a polite lovely guy. That's so sad."

Man Jailed Over Brixton Stabbing Spree

A man who killed his wife and left two other women for dead in "ferocious" attacks in south London has been sentenced to a minimum of 29 years in jail.

Jamaican national Desmond Brooks stabbed Keisha McKenzie to death in July 2013, shortly after attacking his ex-girlfriend Joan Wade.

He also knifed his teenage sister-in-law in the head as she tried to protect her sister, Ms McKenzie.

The Old Bailey heard how 42-year-old Brooks accused his victims of "nagging" and "disrespecting" him.

He subsequently armed himself with knives and went on a 35-minute rampage at two flats in Brixton.

After pleading guilty to the murder of his wife, Brooks was jailed for life and ordered to serve at least 29 years.

He was also sentenced to 19 years for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend and another 12 years for causing grievous bodily harm to his sister-in-law, all to run concurrently.

The court was told how Brooks had attacked Ms Wade, 46, in front of a young child telling her: "You think I'm playing? I'm going to kill you."

Neighbours and passers-by saw him chopping and slashing at Ms Wade after she fled onto her balcony.

He then went to his estranged wife's home nearby and told 28-year-old Ms McKenzie: "Suck your mum, Keisha, you're for dead."

Ms McKenzie's 17-year-old sister, Saffron Yeboah-Simpson, who tried to stop the assault, was herself attacked after she barricaded herself in the bathroom to protect a seven-year-old blood-spattered and screaming boy.

Brooks later phoned his girlfriend and confessed and, when arrested, told police: "I want to hand myself in. I killed my wife. I cannot take it anymore."

Sentencing him, Judge Stephen Kramer said: "Over the period of about an hour on the evening of 29 July 2013, you engaged in a stabbing spree properly said to be of extreme violence and ferocity.

"The catalogue of injuries inflicted is truly appalling."

The court was told Brooks, who had 10 convictions for cannabis offences since his arrival in the UK in 2002, could have been suffering from undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia, only identified after his arrest.

Elizabeth Marsh QC said of Brooks: "He wishes to apologise and say sorry. He is at a loss to understand why he would have hurt the women closest to him.

"He cannot in any way understand what would have provoked him to that."

Brooks will be deported when he is eventually released from prison.

'Cocky' Burglary Suspect Undone By Snapchat

A bungling burglary suspect has been arrested by police after he sent out messages on social media leading them to his hiding place.

Officers in Fairfield, Maine, had been searching for Christopher Wallace for weeks after he was linked to a burglary in January.

According to the Morning Sentinel newspaper, police received tip offs on Sunday that Wallace had posted a Snapchat saying he had returned to his house.

Police went there, and while they were searching the home, Wallace posted a new message saying officers were in the property looking for him.

He added that he was hiding in a cabinet.

The sheriff office's Facebook page explained what happened next: "A search of the kitchen cabinets turned up some food, some pots and pans, and also a pair of feet.

"The pair of feet just so happened to be attached to a person, and that person was Christopher Wallace.

"He was removed from the cabinet, and placed under arrest.

"All of that brings me to the moral of the story. Always remain humble, my friends."

The post said Wallace had become "cocky", which "led to his downfall".

A woman named Erika Hall, 20, was arrested for hindering the apprehension of a suspect, the post added.

"Let's put it this way, when the police ask you multiple times if someone is in the house, and you answer repeatedly that they are not in the house, and that you have not seen said person in 'weeks', you're just going to get arrested.

"That's how it happens."

France Plane Crash: 150 Die As Jet 'Disintegrates'

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

A rescue helicopter has landed at the site of the Germanwings air disaster in the French Alps to find the plane "disintegrated" and no survivors.

The Airbus A320 with 150 people on board came down in a mountainous region, at an altitude of around 6,500ft, between Barcelonnette and Digne.

After taking off at 9.55am (8.55am UK time), a distress signal was issued for flight 4U 9525 at 10.47am (9.47am UK time) after it found itself in an "abnormal situation" on its route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.

France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls said a helicopter had managed to land near the crash site but found no survivors.

Gilbert Sauvan, of the local council, told Les Echos newspaper: "The plane is disintegrated. The largest debris is the size of a car."

France's President Francois Hollande said: "It's a tragedy on our soil."

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, said 45 of those on board are thought to be Spanish. Germanwings said there were 67 Germans on board.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was "deeply shaken" by news of the crash, her spokesman said.

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said debris from the crash had been found at an altitude of 2,000 metres.

He added that he expected "an extremely long and extremely difficult" search and rescue operation because of the area's remoteness.

Emergency workers were not expected to reach the scene for several hours.

Eric Ciotti, the head of the regional council, said search-and-rescue teams were on the way to the crash site at Meolans-Revels.

Flight-tracking data indicated the aircraft plummeted from 40,000ft to 6,200ft in less than eight minutes before it crashed.

French aviation authorities said that the plane, operated by Lufthansa's budget airline, did not issue a distress call and that air traffic controllers had raised the alarm.

France Crash: 16 Victims From One School

Sixteen children from the same school in Germany were on board the passenger plane that crashed in France carrying 150 people.

North Rhine-Westphalia state Education Minister Sylvia Loerhmann said: "We know that the school group boarded the plane," the dpa news agency quoted her as saying.

The Germanwings plane, which was travelling from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, crashed in the French Alps between Barcelonnette and Digne carrying 144 passengers and six crew.

There are not thought to be any survivors.

:: Live updates on the crash

The school the children had visited, about 45 minutes from Barcelona, said 16 students from the town of Haltern had been on an exchange trip that ended on Tuesday.

Marti Pujol, mayor of the village of Llinars de Valles, said: "There were 16 children and two teachers who had spent a week here, poor things.

"The children were aged about 15."

Media reports in Germany said earlier that the schoolchildren and teachers were from Joseph-Koenig Gymnasium high school in the town.

The headmaster of the school has sent students home, and parents have gathered at Dusseldorf airport, Halterner Zeitung reported.

Local police are still awaiting official confirmation, but they have already sent officers to the school to help students and staff.

The school has so far refused to comment.

At a press conference, Germanwings said there were two babies on the flight.

Sobbing and grieving families at both Barcelona and Dusseldorf airports were led away by airport workers and crisis counsellors.

Family members arriving at Dusseldorf were taken from the main terminal to a nearby building, which has been partially covered with sheets for privacy.

In Barcelona, police escorted several crying women to a secure part of the airport. One held a jacket over the head of another woman, who was sobbing.

The aircraft started descending one minute after reaching its cruising height and continued losing altitude for eight minutes.

Germanwings managing director Thomas Winkelmann said: "The aircraft's contact with French radar, French air traffic controllers ended at 10.53 am at an altitude of about 6,000 feet.

"The plane then crashed."

A total of 67 Germans are believed to have been on board, as well as 45 Spaniards.

The country's chancellor, Angela Merkel, will travel to the region on Wednesday.

She described the crash as "a shock which has plunged us into deep mourning in Germany, France and Spain".

The German leader added: "What concerns me now is the extent of the suffering, which this catastrophe has brought to so many people.

"My thoughts and condolences, and those of the entire government, go out to the people who have lost their lives, including many compatriots."

Ms Merkel has urged people not to speculate on the cause.

Wife Jailed For Attempt To 'Boil Her Husband'

A woman has been jailed for four years for pouring scalding water over her husband, leaving him with first and second degree burns to his body.

Ken Gregory, 65, was attacked by his wife, Theresa Gilbertson, a former special constable, at their bungalow in Peterborough last April after he told her he wanted a divorce.

The retired BT manager suffered blistering to 14% of his body stretching from his scalp to his lower back, and some scars may never fade.

Prosecutor Thomas Brown told Peterborough Crown Court Gilbertson, 60, set out to "boil her husband".

"The marriage had become extremely strained and there were underlying difficulties concerning money, the conduct of Teresa Gilbertson and her unrealistic expectation of what he could provide", he said.

Sentencing her for causing grievous bodily harm with intent, judge Peter Murphy said he saw "no remorse" from Gilbertson, and also issued a restraining order preventing her from approaching Mr Gregory.

"He told you he wanted a divorce and feelings were running high. The pouring of hot water is the use of a weapon and you clearly intended to injure him but mercifully his injuries were not more serious," he said.

Gilbertson had claimed the incident was an accident, but any decision to pour water over her husband was spontaneous.

Speaking after the conviction, Mr Gregory said it was important to challenge the stigma surrounding men who are victims of abuse.

The court heard that three weeks before the incident she had thrown tea over him while he slept.

The couple met through ballroom dancing following the death of Mr Gregory's first wife of more than 30 years in 2008.

But they are now in the process of getting divorced.
