Tiger Attacks Keeper At Steve Irwin's Zoo

A tiger handler is being treated in hospital after being mauled during a show at the zoo started by Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

The 30-year-old was bitten on the neck and shoulder when the tiger became "over excited" during play, Australia Zoo says.

The senior handler, who had raised the animal since it was a cub, remained in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

He suffered two large puncture wounds and was conscious when he was flown to Brisbane from the zoo, which is on the Sunshine Coast.

He was reportedly attacked in front of a large crowd.

The zoo's director Wes Mennon said co-workers saw the attack and helped drag the victim, who has not been named, to safety.

"The tigers get exited ... when they're playing, that's what they do and unfortunately," he said.

"It's got a bit too exited and just grabbed him in that spot and let go pretty much immediately once the other handlers grabbed him.

"Our emergency response team were on the scene immediately. They acted professionally and calmly. My hat goes off to them."

Andrew Haggerty, a doctor at air rescue charity RACQ CareFlight, said the handler's injuries could have been much worse.

"The neck is a very complex area and contains lots of serious structures including blood vessels, and perhaps most importantly the airway," he said.

"Any bleeding in the area itself could cause significant complications."

Helicopter pilot Alan Carstens, who was called to the scene to take the man to hospital, said it was a strange afternoon.

"I honestly thought someone was kidding me, they said, 'It's a tiger attack', I said 'no', but it was," he told reporters.

"We landed just outside the African (enclosure) area, right next door to where the tigers are.

"I waited with the chopper, I was looking at a tortoise straight opposite me, I thought it was a rock initially, then it started moving."

Twitter user dbass9 posted a picture of a media throng at the zoo, saying: "I saw the tiger attack at Australia Zoo today.

"Things went from playful to violent instantly. I hope that poor fella recovers quickly."

Australia Zoo, which keeps Bengal and Sumatran tigers, said it was conducting a full investigation into the attack.

The zoo was made famous by Irwin, who starred in the hugely successful wildlife documentary series The Crocodile Hunter.

It is now run by his family, including widow Terri.

Gibraltar Diplomatic Bag Row Heightens Tensions

Britain has made a formal protest after Spanish police opened a diplomatic bag on the border with Gibraltar.

An explanation is being demanded by the Foreign Office of the "serious infringement" of international protocols.

Assurances are also being sought that there will be no repeat of the incident, in which a diplomatic bag being carried by a courier into Spain, was opened and searched by Guardia Civil officers.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "Diplomatic bags are inviolable."

It comes amid continuing tensions between London and Madrid over the British overseas territory.

Gibraltar Spain Tensions have been growing between London and Madrid over the territory

Diplomatic bags, which are used to carry documents and other items, between governments and their diplomatic missions abroad are protected by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The spokesman said: "This was a serious infringement of the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

"We take very seriously any reported abuse of the protocol surrounding official correspondence and the diplomatic bag.

"We have asked the Spanish authorities to investigate what occurred and take action to ensure it does not happen again.

"As far as we are concerned there is no justification for this infringement of the UK's rights under the Vienna Convention. Official correspondence and diplomatic bags are inviolable."

Frictions over the disputed territory have been rising since the construction of an artificial reef by the Gibraltar government earlier this year, which the Spanish said interfered with their fishermen.

Madrid responded by imposing tighter border controls, leading to long delays at the frontier.

Earlier this month, the Spanish ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office over what was said to be an unauthorised incursion into Gibraltarian waters by a Spanish survey vessel.

It was the third time the Spanish ambassador had been publicly summoned over the Gibraltar issue since the current Spanish government took office in December 2011.

Family Guy Dog Brian Griffin Is Killed Off

Fans of the long-running TV show Family Guy have been left shocked after Brian, one of its main characters, was killed off.

The talking family pet, who met his end under the wheels of a car in an episode entitled Life Of Brian, has been replaced by a new dog voiced by Tony Sirico from The Sopranos.

"Boardwalk Empire" Season Four New York Premiere Sirico is the voice behind new dog Vinnie

However, viewers have taken to Twitter to express their outrage and anguish at his death, and have even launched a petition aimed at resurrecting the popular character.

Brian had been part of the animated show since it began back in 1999, and his demise came as a surprise to many given his key role in plot-lines and central relationship with precocious baby Stewie.

The production team had revealed they were going to kill off a member of the Griffin family, and replace them with a new character, but few expected it to be the articulate canine stalwart.

There was initially some doubt whether Brian's death was genuine, but the show confirmed his fatal departure with a tweet from its official account: "RIP Brian. #familyguy."

The dog, voiced by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, bid farewell to the family in an emotional scene after being run over. Brian was quickly replaced by the new family dog, called Vinnie.

Seth McFarlane MacFarlane, the show's creator, voiced the character of Brian

Steve Callaghan, the executive producer of Family Guy, said once the idea of killing off Brian had been suggested it "caught fire".

"We thought it could be a fun way to shake things up," Callaghan said.

"We got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters."

Family Guy is now in its 12th series, and has been nominated for 12 Emmy awards.

Manny Pacquiao Has Bank Accounts Frozen

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has revealed that authorities have frozen all his domestic bank accounts over allegations of unpaid taxes from lucrative fights in the United States, crippling him financially.

The millionaire Filipino sporting superstar said the move meant he had been forced to borrow money to fulfil pledges to help victims of the devastating super typhoon in the Philippines, which has claimed more than 5,000 lives.

Pacquiao, 34, has branded as "harassment" the freeze order issued by the Philippines' Bureau of Internal Revenue.

The shock announcement came just days after Pacquiao made a victorious return to the boxing ring, with a unanimous points decision win over American opponent Brandon Rios in Macau.

Pacquiao dedicated his first victory in two years to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which will only fuel his popularity among millions of ordinary Filipinos who idolise the fighter.

The former eight-division world champion is now eyeing more lucrative fights in the United States.

Manny Pacquiao Pacquiao is a second-term congressman

He also has a political career in the Philippines, where he is a second-term congressman with ambitions of eventually becoming president.

Pacquiao said the tax office took the action because it believed he had evaded paying 2.2 billion pesos (£31m) in taxes on his fights in the United States in 2008 and 2009, when he was at the peak of his career and earning tens of millions of dollars.

He said he had broken no laws because he had already paid taxes on those earnings in the United States, which has a treaty with the Philippines that allows citizens of both countries avoid double taxation.

However, he said the tax bureau had rejected the documents he provided as proof that he had already paid the money.

"I am not a criminal or a thief. I am not hiding anything. I will face my problems as they come," Pacquiao said.

"I have already paid my taxes in America. Had I not paid the correct taxes they (US authorities) would have come after me and I would not have been able to travel there."

BOX-PHILIPPINES-USA-PACQUIAO-RIOS-WEATHER-TYPHOON Thousands turned out in the Philippines to celebrate Pacquiao's win

The Philippines tax bureau confirmed the local bank accounts of Pacquiao and his wife, Jinkee, had been frozen.

President Benigno Aquino's spokesman Herminio Coloma brushed off suggestions Pacquiao was being singled out for political harassment.

"We are a government of laws not of men," he told reporters.

The Government has been running an active campaign against high-profile tax evaders, targeting movie stars as well as businessmen.

Pacquiao said most of his cash was kept in the Philippines bank accounts.

He said the freeze order had left him without money to pay his staff, and forced him to borrow "not less than one million pesos" to fulfil pledges to help victims of a devastating super typhoon in the Philippines.

At his peak, Pacquiao was regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, becoming the only man to win world titles in eight weight divisions.

The former street kid who ran away from home to pursue a boxing career became one of the wealthiest athletes in the world.

But his career nose-dived after suffering two losses last year, the second in a humiliating knockout to Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez that prompted questions over whether the ageing fighter should retire.

But even last year, Forbes magazine listed him as the 14th highest-paid athlete globally with an estimated $34m (£21m) in earnings.

Wolf On The Loose After Five Escape From Zoo

A wolf is on the loose near Colchester Zoo after breaking through a perimeter fence and vanishing into thick undergrowth.

Police are containing the area while they hunt for the animal.

At 3pm, Essex Police tweeted: "Positive sighting of escaped wolf near @ColchesterZoo and area being contained."

Keepers discovered that five wolves had escaped through a damaged fence during a morning inspection, with a sixth staying in its enclosure.

All but one have been accounted for, although two had to be shot dead.

A statement from the zoo said: "One of the wolves returned immediately of its own accord and one was darted and recaptured.

"Unfortunately, as they were further away and an anaesthetic dart takes 15 minutes to take effect, two had to be shot.

"The remaining wolf is thought to be sheltering in thick undergrowth and the police are assisting in its recapture. Wolves are naturally timid and provided they are not cornered in any way do not provide a risk to the public."

The statement went on: "Colchester Zoo's keepers have been devastated by the loss of two of their beloved Timber wolves."

Police were called in to help with the search for the still-missing wolf.

"The helicopter and ground units are searching Maldon Road and the fields surrounding after an animal was reported missing shortly after 8am," a statement from Essex Police said.

Members of the public have been asked to stay away from the area to avoid hindering the search.

They are also asked to dial 999 if the wolf is spotted.

In August members of the public were warned not to approach a red river hog that went on the run from the zoo.

And in February 2012 horrified members of the public looked on as a "dazed" barn owl flew into the zoo's lion enclosure and was killed.

Knox: Prosecutor Seeks 30-Year Jail Term

A prosecutor has asked a jury to convict Amanda Knox for the murder of Meredith Kercher and sentence her to a total of 30 years.

Prosecutor Alessandro Crini sought 26 years for murder and another four for slander.

Mr Crini also demanded 26 years for Knox's co-defendant, Raffaele Sollecito.

He made the request after two days of closing arguments at the retrial for the brutal murder of Ms Kercher, who was stabbed to death in 2007 in the home she shared with Knox in Perugia.

Meredith Kercher Meredith Kercher was killed on November 1, 2007

Ms Kercher, 21, was found in a pool of blood in her room, her throat slit.

Knox, who is not attending the trial, and Sollecito, her boyfriend at the time, have always denied wrongdoing. They insist they spent the night of the murder at Sollecito's home.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in the first trial in 2009, including one year for slander for blaming Ms Kercher's murder on a Congolese-born bar owner.

Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years.

Raffaele Sollecito Sollecito told the court weeks ago that he has been living a 'nightmare'

Both defendants were acquitted on appeal in 2011 and released from prison, but then Italy's highest criminal court ordered a retrial.

Knox, an American student who spent four years in jail in Perugia, is back in the US.

Six years after the killing, and countless hearings later, no clear motive has emerged.

The prosecutors have argued that Ms Kercher was killed in a drug-fuelled sex game gone awry.

The retrial, being held in Florence, is expected to reach a verdict in January.

Scottish Independence: £600 Better Off Claim

Key Economics Of An Independent Scotland

Updated: 3:23pm UK, Tuesday 26 November 2013

For those without the time to sift through all 650 pages of the Scottish White Paper, here are some of the key points on the economics of an independent Scotland.

:: The Big Picture

At present, Scotland has only limited autonomy to change taxes or spending - with many of the key decisions taken in Westminster.

An independent Scotland would have the autonomy to determine its own taxes and spending plans. However, the White Paper says that the country will accept some constraints on these in order to keep the pound.

It would have the independence to control the flow of both people and goods across its borders - though, again, the White Paper says the plan would be to leave this flow unchanged.

The paper presents a vision of a country which could become a small, independent dynamic economy with a vital corporate sector, low taxes and high exports.

Whether this is possible remains a matter for debate. The Scottish economy is indeed a dynamic, relatively prosperous area, albeit with a high reliance on oil revenues.

However, attractive as independence might seem to many, it would come with some costs and constraints, as the White Paper reflects (occasionally).

:: The Public Finances

Scotland generates more tax than the rest of the UK thanks largely to North Sea oil revenues.

However, it also spends more, per head, than the rest of the UK. The upshot is that its net position is remarkably similar. In 2012/13 Scotland had a primary deficit (eg borrowing before interest costs) of 5.3% of GDP deficit. So did the rest of the UK.

However, the estimates for where Scotland will be in the coming years differ depending on whose numbers you use.

The White Paper calculates that the deficit will be between 1.6% and 3.2% of GDP by 2016/17 – the potential year of independence if there is a "yes" vote in next year's referendum.

However the Institute for Fiscal Studies thinks the deficit will be significantly higher at just over 4% of GDP by then.

The real difference of opinion occurs in the following years. The IFS thinks that as North Sea oil revenues decline and Scotland's growth rate remains steady, it could be left with a big hole in its public finances, equivalent to 4.1% of national income.

This is what Danny Alexander's claim of a £1,000 tax rise for each Scot is based on.

Alex Salmond, by contrast, believes that North Sea revenues will last longer, and that Scotland will be able to generate enough growth as a small, dynamic independent economy, akin to Singapore or Hong Kong, to avoid such an outcome.

However, the SNP has not provided any long-term forecasts to compare with the IFS's numbers.

:: The National Debt

Britain has a sizeable pile of debts built up over recent decades - by 2016/17 they will stand at £1.6 trillion. The White Paper accepts that some of this should be borne by an independent Scotland (which in turn means Scotland will have to service that debt, paying interest on it for many years into the future).

It suggests two ways of calculating the scale of that debt:

1. A population share: under this, the national debt would be split between Scotland and the rest of the UK based on their population sizes. Under this, the White Paper says Scotland would take responsibility for around £130bn - leaving it with total debts equivalent to 76% of GDP. This is a relatively high debt-to-GDP ratio by international standards.

2. An historical share: under this plan, the national debt would be split based on how much in the way of debt (or surpluses) Scotland and the rest of the UK generated in recent years. Because Scotland has generated a series of budget surpluses due to North Sea oil revenues, its share of the debt would considerably lower at approximately £100bn - 55% of Scottish GDP.

:: Currency

The White Paper says that Scotland will keep the pound, becoming a part of an effective currency union with the rest of the UK.

It says that it is entitled to do so as an effective shareholder of the Bank of England. The Bank would set monetary policy (in other words, interest rates and various banking regulations) for the entire currency area.

Westminster politicians have raised questions over whether the UK Treasury, or indeed the Bank itself, would be willing to authorise this. The SNP suggests it will be a Scottish right.

The White Paper says that an independent Scotland would agree to be bound by fiscal rules and an independent Scottish Fiscal Commission to keep its public finances in check. What this might mean in practice is that the country will not have the tax-and-spend independence it would otherwise have with a fully independent currency.

It's a similar analogy to the euro, where the single currency's members are having to sign up to a "fiscal compact" barring them from borrowing excessively.

:: Financial Regulation

One area covered in only scant detail in the report is precisely what would happen in the event of a future financial crisis - a significant question given that Scottish banks (RBS, HBOS) were at the centre of the recent financial crisis.

The report says that the Bank of England would remain in place as a lender of last resort if a bank was in trouble. However, it also says that while the Bank of England would be partly responsible for broader "macroprudential" financial regulation in Scotland, Edinburgh would also have her own independent financial regulator which would take on the job of the Financial Conduct Authority in Scotland. Whether this complex system of structures would cohere remains an open question.

And there is a deeper, more worrying issue: the Bank of England's Lender of Last Resort function kicks in only if a bank is having cash-flow issues, not if it is fundamentally insolvent.

If a bank is to be bailed out, taxpayers tend to have to step in to rescue the failed institution. Quite which taxpayers that would be is left unclear in the document.

:: North Sea Oil

One of the key elements underlying the White Paper is that the UK Government has benefited from billions of pounds of North Sea oil related revenues over recent decades, and not been set aside for future generations (let alone for those in Scotland specifically).

Indeed, unlike in some countries, including Norway, where a chunk of the proceeds of revenues is put into a fund for the future, Britain's revenues went towards current spending, helping boost the overall economy and public finances through the 1980s and 1990s.

Even today, Scotland is responsible for 94% of North Sea oil revenue (though this is not an enormous total earner for Britain, at 0.4% of GDP).

As a result, the country, which has 8.3% of the population, pays 9.2% of total taxes. However, at present that extra revenue is compensated for by extra spending.

The White Paper suggests that in future the oil revenue could be put towards a sovereign wealth fund, called the Scottish Energy Fund. However, some will ask whether this is really compatible with the rest of the White Paper's calculations, which seem to imply a large role for North Sea revenues in paying off the country's net debt.

Nigella Lawson 'Was Off Her Head On Drugs'

Celebrity cook Nigella Lawson has been accused by her former husband Charles Saatchi of taking drugs.

The claim was heard in court ahead of the fraud trial of two sisters who used to work as personal assistants (PAs) to the celebrity couple.

Italians Francesca Grillo, 41, and Elisabetta Grillo, 35, are accused of using a credit card given to them by the pair to buy things for themselves.

The defendants, of Bayswater, west London, deny the charges.

The court was read an email from Mr Saatchi to Ms Lawson saying the defendants "would get off" because Ms Lawson was "so off your head on drugs".

The email read: "Now the Grillos will get off on the basis that you, Mimi (and another person) were so off your head on drugs you allowed them to spend whatever they like.

Former personal assistants to Charles Saatchi and Nigella Lawson, Elisabetta (left) and Francesca Grillo (right) arriving with an unidentified woman (centre) Elisabetta (L) and Francesca Grillo (R) with an unidentified woman (C)

"Yes, I believe every word they said."

Mimi is Ms Lawson's daughter from her first marriage to John Diamond.

Defence barristers acting for the two defendants had wanted details of the alleged drug use by Ms Lawson - who ended her 10-year marriage to Mr Saatchi earlier this year - to be heard in the case.

Judge Robin Johnson, who read out the email in court, said it could be reported despite the trial at Isleworth Crown Court in west London not having yet started.

Judge Johnson said Mr Saatchi was asked by police to explain what he meant in the message to the TV chef.

The judge told the court that Mr Saatchi said: "At the time of sending the email I was completely astounded by the scale of drug use set out in the statements (from the defendants).

"Nevertheless I did believe the allegations that I'm referring to in the email.

Charles Saatchi Charles Saatchi accepted a police caution for assault earlier this year

"I have been asked whether it referred to a belief that Nigella or the children permitted the sisters to spend whatever they liked. I can't remember precisely what I had in mind.

"On reflection, I was simply speculating that the sisters would use this information to defend themselves."

It is alleged that between January 1 2008 and December 31 2012, the Grillos committed fraud by abusing their positions as PAs by using a company credit card for personal gain.

The TV cook is expected to give evidence during the trial, which is due to last at least two weeks.

Earlier this year, Ms Lawson applied to divorce Mr Saatchi on the grounds of his continuing unreasonable behaviour.

The pair broke up after pictures were published in a newspaper in June showing the millionaire art dealer holding his wife of 10 years by the throat.

The incident on the terrace of Scott's restaurant in Mayfair, central London, was dismissed by Mr Saatchi as nothing more than "a playful tiff" but he later accepted a police caution for assault.

Lostprophets Star Admits Baby Rape Attempts

Former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins has admitted a string of sex offences, including two charges of attempting to rape a baby.

The singer had faced 24 sex-offence charges but pleaded guilty to 11 of them at the last minute, nine of which were unchanged and two of attempted rape of an infant, which were downgraded from actual rape.

The charges included sexually touching a one-year-old and encouraging a mother to abuse her own child during a webcam chat. Watkins also admitted possessing and making child abuse images as well as being behind the plot to rape a baby.

Watkins, 36, from Pontypridd, south Wales, insisted he had no memory of what would have been key video evidence at the trial showing the abuse of his one-year-old victim, the court heard.

Ian Watkins Download Festival 2008 - Day 3 The singer appeared to shake as sentence was discussed in court

Prosecuting QC Chris Clee said camcorder footage shot in a London hotel room showed Watkins perform a sex act on the child.
Computer analysts found the footage had been uploaded to online storage facility The Cloud.

Mr Clee said that following this meeting, Watkins and his co-accused - a woman who cannot be named for legal reasons - exchanged emails about how they would not go "easy" on the child next time.

The court also heard details of a plot to turn babies in subservient sex slaves using hard drugs.

Watkins and the woman swapped messages where they discussed plans to blow crystal-meth smoke into the child's face at a secret meet up in a Cardiff hotel.

On March 23, Watkins sent the woman a message saying he wanted a "summer of filthy child porn" and how he wanted to take things "to the next level" and spoke of a desire to "cross the line".

The disgraced rocker was originally charged with actual rape but insisted sex with the child did not take place. Mr Clee told the judge that both attempted rape admissions were accepted and acknowledged there was an argument regarding what the video evidence seized from Watkins's laptop actually showed.

Lostprophets The group have since split-up after Watkins' arrest

"From the footage, there is an argument as to whether the full offence is made out," he told judge Mr Justice Royce.

"If it is made out, it is minimal. There is so little difference between the full attempt and the attempt as to make no difference. We are prepared to accept the pleas as tendered."

Mr Clee also told the judge that the prosecution had in mind the effect on the jury of watching the explicit video footage.

As talk of sentence was discussed in court, a pale faced and grey-haired Watkins began shaking in the dock.

Watkins will be sentenced on December 18.
