Russians Held Over Alleged French Attack Plot

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 20 Januari 2015 | 23.21

Five Russians have been arrested in southern France on suspicion of planning an attack, local prosecutors have said.

Four of the suspects, all from the Caucasus region, were detained in Montpellier and a fifth was arrested around 40 miles away in Beziers on Monday.

Prosecutors said certain "products" were recovered during searches of addresses linked to the suspects. Midi Libre newspaper reported that a cache of explosives was found.

The arrests came after three Islamists killed 17 people in attacks in Paris over three days.

It was not immediately clear if the latest arrests were connected to the investigation into the violence at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket. Reports claimed they may have been arrested in connection with organised crime.

IS Demands $200m Ransom For Japan Hostages

Islamic State has issued a video threatening to kill two Japanese hostages unless a $200m (£133m) ransom is paid within 72 hours.

In the video, a black-clad militant brandishing a knife addresses the camera in English as he stands between two hostages wearing orange jumpsuits.

"You now have 72 hours to pressure your government into making a wise decision by paying the $200m to save the lives of your citizens," he says.

The footage, identified as being made by the militant group's al Furqan media arm and posted on militant websites, also sees the militant criticising the Japanese government's support for US-led airstrikes against IS.

But the Japanese government has said it will not bow to extremism.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a news conference in Jerusalem: "I strongly demand they not be harmed and that they be immediately released.

"I am extremely indignant at such an act."

The militant who appears in the video is apparently the same man involved in the beheadings of other IS captives.

Speaking in a British accent, he says: "To the prime minister of Japan: Although you are more than 8,000 and 500 kilometres (5,280 miles) from the Islamic State, you willingly have volunteered to take part in this crusade.

"You have proudly donated $100m to kill our women and children, to destroy the homes of the Muslims."

The two hostages are identified as Kenji Goto Jogo and Haruna Yukawa.

In August, a Japanese citizen believed to be Mr Yukawa - a private military company operator - was kidnapped in Syria.

Mr Goto is a freelance journalist who went to report on Syria's civil war last year.

IS has seized swathes of territory across Iraq and Syria to form an Islamic Caliphate.

Videos featuring a British-accented jihadi were published showing the murders of US hostages James Foley and Steven Sotloff and British hostages David Haines and Alan Henning.

The Foreign Office said it was investigating the video and reports that the militant is British.

"We are aware of the video and we are studying the content," a spokeswoman said.

The Japanese Prime Minister is currently on a six-day visit to the Middle East.

Last week, he pledged around $200m in non-military assistance for countries battling IS.

Japan's foreign ministry said it was checking the video, but if it was genuine "such a threat by taking hostages is unacceptable and we are extremely resentful".

Ex-MI6 Boss Warns West Not To Insult Islam

By Alistair Bunkall, Defence Correspondent

The former chief of MI6 has warned that anyone insulting Islam can expect to provoke a reaction and that "there will be another terrorist attack in this country."

Sir John Sawers was delivering his first speech since leaving office. He stepped down as 'C' in November 2014 after five years at the helm of the Secret Intelligence Service.

Sir John picked up on comments made by the Pope in reference to the provocative cartoons published in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, where 12 were killed in a terror attack. Al Qaeda said the attacks were revenge for the depiction of Mohammed.

Pope Francis told crowds in The Philippines that a friend who had cursed his mother could "expect a punch" in return.

Sir John said: "There is a requirement for restraint from those of us in the West.

"I rather agree with the Pope that, of course, the attacks in Paris were completely unacceptable and cannot be justified on any basis whatsoever, but I think respect for other people's religion is also an important part of this.

"If you show disrespect for others' core values then you are going to provoke an angry response. That doesn't justify anything, but I think we just need to bear it in mind."

Sir John praised the work of the intelligence and security agencies but reiterated the threat to the UK from terrorists: "If I was to sit here and say will the goalkeepers of the security services and the police keep every single attempt to get the ball into the net, out? No. At some point these threats will get through and there will be another terrorist attack in this country."

Sir John said there cannot be any "no-go areas" either in the physical or virtual world and said there cannot be a trade-off between security and privacy.

"If the technology companies allow to be developed, areas that are simply impenetrable, you're inviting problems," he warned.

Fred Talbot 'Gained Boys' Trust Before Abuse'

TV weatherman Fred Talbot used his "boundless energy" and "extrovert personality" to gain the trust of five schoolboys he sexually abused, a court has heard.

The 65-year-old is accused of indecently assaulting his victims between the late 1960s and the early 1980s during his former career as a teacher.

Four of the alleged victims were pupils at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, where Talbot was a biology teacher.

Prosecutor Neil Usher, opening the case at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, said: "The very qualities that made Fred Talbot so successful as a TV celebrity - his boundless energy, his infectious enthusiasm, his extrovert personality - helped him gain, we say, the trust of these boys.

"Trust, which the prosecution say, Mr Talbot repeatedly abused when, away from their parents on school trips organised by Mr Talbot, he sexually assaulted each of them.

"And we say that like many child abusers who are in a position of authority who are confident and who are plainly well liked by their peers, he gambled that each of the boys he took advantage of would find it impossible to speak out and tell other adults what he had done, either through fear of not being believed or because it would inevitably involve speaking to parents or other teachers about embarrassing matters of a sexual, indeed homosexual, nature."

Mr Usher said the allegations centred around the time Talbot was a trainee teacher in Newcastle in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and secondly from the mid-70s to 1984 when he taught in Altrincham.

The police investigation into Talbot in 2012 came after publicity into an unrelated sex abuse investigation at St Ambrose College, also in Altrincham.

The prosecutor said he offered "no comment" when he was spoken to by police and formally interviewed under caution.

Talbot, known as "Fred the Weatherman", appeared on local and national TV from the mid-1980s.

Talbot, of Bowdon, Greater Manchester, denies 10 counts of indecent assault.

The trial continues.

Dad Jailed For Killing Daughter With Ecstasy

A father who took ecstasy with his 17-year-old daughter and failed to get her medical help for more than an hour after supplying her with the class A drug has been jailed for five years and four months.

Jason Wilkes was told that although there was no suggestion that it was ever his intention to set about a course of conduct that would lead to Chloe Wilkes' death there were features of gross negligence, Maidstone Crown Court heard.

Sentencing Wilkes, 45, Judge Philip Statman said: "You will lead the rest of your life knowing that your conduct led to the death of your daughter who, in my judgment, you loved.

"That's an enormous burden for you to have to carry with you, but it is not just your burden.

"She is lost to her mother, brother and her extended family, a life tragically cut short."

Wilkes drove his daughter from their home in Ashford, Kent, to a woodland area on the edge of the town, and then to an industrial estate where he worked, in an attempt to cool her down rather than taking her to the nearest hospital which was under three miles away after she complained of feeling unwell, the court was told.

If he had sought medical help for her as soon as he realised she was unwell, hospital staff might have been able to stop her overheating, which caused her heart to stop, the court heard.

Wilkes had been due to stand trial over his daughter's death but then pleaded guilty to Chloe's manslaughter by causing her to take a noxious substance. He had previously pleaded guilty to supplying her with MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.

Prosecutor James Mulholland QC told the court that Wilkes and his daughter had taken drugs, including ecstasy and cocaine, together at least three times before but text messages between them showed it was a regular occurrence.

Wilkes, who was seen crying in the dock, would buy the drugs and split them between himself and his daughter, who was not employed or attending college at the time of her death, he said.

On the evening of July 25 last year, Wilkes and Chloe took a gram of cocaine and a gram of MDMA between them, staying up all night, the court heard.

The following day, Wilkes bought another gram of MDMA and once his 13-year-old son, Chloe's brother, had gone to bed, father and daughter each wrapped half a gram of the drug up in a cigarette paper and swallowed it with water, "a method of ingestion called bombing", the prosecutor said.

By 1am on July 27, Chloe had started to become agitated and disorientated, Mr Mulholland said.

Wilkes first took her into the back garden of their home before loading her barefoot into the back of his car and driving her to a wooded area known as The Warren where she began talking nonsense and rambling, the court was told.

He then drove her to RK Resources on the Henwood Industrial Estate where he worked and tried to use a fan to cool her down.

Wilkes eventually called 999 at 2.01am, telling the operator his daughter was not breathing and that she did not have a pulse. She died later that day.

A toxicology report showed that Chloe had 3.1mg of MDMA per litre in her blood, enough to prove fatal. Cocaine was also found in her blood.

Roache: I Was Blessed To Work With Kirkbride

William Roache, who worked alongside Coronation Street actress Anne Kirkbride for over 40 years, has spoken of the fun they had together.

The 60-year-old actress, who died on Monday, was part of some major storylines in the ITV show after joining in 1972.

A statement on the soap's website said the cast and crew were "heartbroken" and a spokeswoman told Sky News filming had been "stood down as a mark of respect".

Roache, who played her on-screen husband Ken Barlow, said: "All of us wanted to carry on filming today, that's a natural feel, for Annie's sake, for all of our sakes. But when it came to it we couldn't do it.

"To have her a partner for the last 40 years - I couldn't have been more blessed."

One of the most memorable plots - the love triangle between Deirdre, Ken and Mike Baldwin - led to her being voted TV Personality Of The Year in 1983.

"Annie was always loving, always happy, there was never a laugh far away," Roache said. "Even in the midst of shouting and crying, there was always a laugh."

When her character chose Ken over Mike in 1983, cheers went up as the "result" flashed up on the Old Trafford scoreboard.

It read: "Ken and Deirdre reunited. Ken 1 - Mike 0."

Baby Boy Shot Dead By Five-Year-Old Brother

By Sky News US Team

A nine-month-old boy is dead after his brother, five, accidentally shot him in the head while playing with a gun.

The baby was rushed to hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday but was pronounced dead.

Emergency responders were called to a home in Elmo, a rural town in northwestern Missouri, by the brothers' frantic mother.

Sheriff Darren White said the woman had told 911 that her five-year-old son had shot her nine-month-old son in the head with a paintball gun.

But when the responders arrived at the scene they determined that the infant had been shot in the head with a real weapon - a .22 calibre Magnum revolver.

When the gun fired, the infant was in a playpen, police said.

Mr White said there is no reason to believe the shooting was anything other than an accident.

Nurse Poisoned Hospital Patients, Jurors Told

A hospital nurse murdered three patients and poisoned 18 more at Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport, a court has heard.

Victorino Chua, 49, is accused of contaminating saline bags and ampoules with insulin and deliberately altering the dosages on prescription charts.

Tracey Arden, 44, Arnold Lancaster, aged 71, and Derek Weaver, 83, all died as a result of his "handiwork", it is alleged.

The prosecution told jurors at Manchester Crown Court that a "pattern" became clear after a massive police investigation.

"The pieces of the forensic jigsaw began to emerge," said Peter Wright QC.

"The person responsible for each of these matters became increasingly clear. It was, we say, Victorino Chua.

"As the investigation intensified, the common denominator, the defendant, was shown in sharper and sharper relief."

The court heard it was a "lottery" which patients were harmed, with other doctors and nurses unsuspectingly using the contaminated medicines.

Chua, originally from the Philippines, had worked at Stepping Hill since 2009. He first came to the UK in 2002.

All the offences are said to have happened between June 2011 and January 2012.

Chua has pleaded not guilty to 36 charges in total, including three alleged murders, one count of grievous bodily harm with intent, and 23 counts of attempted grievous bodily harm.

He is also facing eight counts of attempting to cause a poison to be administered and one count of administering a poison.

The trial continues.
