A former Delaware paediatrician faces trial for allegedly waterboarding his 11-year-old stepdaughter by holding her face under a faucet.
Melvin Morse, 60, has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment and assault charges.
A nationally recognised paediatrician, Morse has authored several books on paranormal science and near-death experiences involving children.
He has also appeared on shows including Larry King Live and The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss his research.
Morse was arrested in 2012 after the girl told investigators he had disciplined her with the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding. Several times, he held her face under running water, the girl said.
Police said at the time that he brought her to "a possible near-death state".
Waterboarding - which critics say amounts to torture - has been used in the past by US interrogators on terror suspects.
Morse's trial opened with the selection of the jury, when eight women and four men were chosen.
Witness testimony begins today.
